New Delhi: In a lavish ceremony at the famous Ramlila Maidan on Thursday, Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA, took the oath of office as Delhi's chief minister. The 50-year-old succeeds Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi as Delhi's fourth female chief minister.

Alongside Gupta, six BJP leaders took the oath of office as cabinet colleagues in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President J.P. Nadda, Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-ruled States, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Singh, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kapil Mishra, and Ravinder Indraj. Parvesh Verma defeated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat.

Film stars, diplomats, and the chief ministers of 20 states have all been invited to the grand ceremony, which marks the BJP's 26-year comeback to power in the nation's capital. Additionally invited are BJP leaders and campaigners from other states who participated in the Delhi elections.

Gupta, a former president of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) and councilor for a civic organization, is the fourth BJP chief minister in Delhi, following Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj. Notably, in every state where the BJP is in power, Gupta is the only current female chief minister.

"Will not reside in Sheesh Mahal, but with Janta." Delhi Chief Minister-elect Rekha Gupta made fun of Arvind Kejriwal just hours before departing for the grand ceremony at the famous Ramlila Maidan. She claimed that she would live with the "janta" rather than the expansive 40,000 square yard official bungalow, known as "Sheeshmahal" by the BJP, which was the official residence of the AAP chief from 2015 until October 2024.

She claimed that she would live with the "janta" rather than the expansive 40,000 square yard official bungalow, known as "Sheeshmahal" by the BJP, which was the official residence of the AAP chief from 2015 until October 2024. When asked by Times Now if she would live in Sheeshmahal, the Delhi CM-designate responded, "Bilkul bhi nahi.. I will live with Janta, not in Sheesh Mahal." First-time MLA Rekha Gupta has pledged to create a museum out of the former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's official residence.

"By March 8, women in Delhi will receive a monthly aid of Rs 2,500." Prior to the formal swearing-in, Rekha Gupta promised that her government would deliver on its pledge to give women Rs 2,500 a month in aid and that the AAP would be held responsible for its deeds while in power. Gupta informed reporters outside her home that by March 8, the first payment of the monthly assistance would be credited to the accounts of qualified women.

The BJP's manifesto sought to surpass the Aam Aadmi Party's pledge of Rs 2,100 per month in support if it won power ahead of the elections. "They will have to give an account for each and every penny to the people," Gupta said, criticizing the previous AAP government.

Eleven days after the results of the Delhi election were announced, on Wednesday evening, Gupta, a seasoned politician, was chosen to lead the legislature party. Gupta, a former president of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) and councilor for the civic body, is expected to succeed Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi as Delhi's fourth female chief minister. She will also succeed Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj as the fourth BJP chief minister in Delhi. Notably, in any state where the BJP is in power, Gupta will be the only incumbent female chief minister. After winning 48 of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP put an end to the AAP's ten-year rule.
