BJP has secured a majority in the
capital Delhi, paving the way for its formation of government. It is still
unclear who will be the new Chief Minister of Delhi and there is also curiosity
about when the oath-taking ceremony of the new Chief Ministers will take place.
Meanwhile, it is being speculated that the swearing-in ceremony of the Chief
Minister will take place after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his
visit to the US.
India Today has reported this, citing sources.
The BJP returned to power in Delhi
after a 27-year wait by winning 48 seats in the 70-member assembly in the
counting of votes on Saturday. The AAP, which has ruled the city for the past
decade, won 22 seats, while key leaders including party chief Arvind Kejriwal
and Manish Sisodia faced defeat. The BJP, which has not yet announced its chief
ministerial candidate, has started high-level meetings to decide on the head of
the government, in which five leaders are emerging as the main contenders.
Parvesh Verma, who emerged as a
giant killer after defeating Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, is at the
top of the list of possible faces for the chief ministerial post in Delhi.
Senior BJP leader Vijender Gupta, who served as the Leader of Opposition in the
Delhi Assembly, prominent Brahmin face Satish Upadhyay, who previously served
as the state president, Delhi BJP general secretary Ashish Sood, who has close
ties with central leaders, and Jitendra Mahajan, a strong hand of the Sangh
from the Vaishya community, are the other contenders.
Prime Minister Modi will be visiting
the US from February 12-13 for his first meeting with US President Donald Trump
in his second term.
The party is expected to stake claim to power next week
after the Prime Minister returns from his foreign tour, sources said, and the
swearing-in ceremony is likely to follow. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva
said the decision on the chief minister's post should be taken by the party's
central leadership, and also suggested the possibility of a new face in the top
post.On Saturday evening, the Prime Minister held a meeting with Home Minister
Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda and other leaders at the party
headquarters. However, it is not yet clear whether they discussed the chief
ministerial candidate and government formation.
